Oldham will hope to round off their season with a win against Wealdstone on the final day of the season.

On Thursday, Dan Gardner continued his fine form in front of goal. The midfielder has ended the campaign scoring four times in his last six, including in two of the last three at home, whilst Gardner will hope to sign off for the last time this season with another effort.

The Opposition

A crushing 1-0 defeat to Eastleigh on Tuesday concluded a four-game home stretch for Wealdstone, with their National League status hanging in the balance ahead of the final day.

The Stones hold a two-point buffer over Boreham Wood who occupy the final spot in the drop zone, whilst a point at Boundary Park could be enough to secure participation in England’s fifth tier for the fifth consecutive season.

Before the recent defeat, Wealdstone had previously won two straight against Chesterfield and crucially Dorking Wanderers, though struggles on the road must be quickly forgotten if they hope for safety.

Three successive defeats away from home and without a clean sheet in their last ten on their travels requires the need for a breakthrough, whilst their National League status remains well in their hands.

Key Threat

Latics’ final opponents have needed moments more often than not throughout the 23/24 campaign, though Max Kretzschmar’s contributions this season have regularly been timely.

His eight strikes from midfield are his most in a league season since 21/22 with Woking, where he notched 13 goals, clearly highlighting Kretzschmar’s eye for the net, with Wealdstone ironically being deadly recipients of the midfielder’s prowess.

His injury time strike to equalise against his current employers back in 2019 in the National League South playoff semi-final a noticeable sign of the danger he poses, along with a plethora of experience to help lead this Stones side to a successful final day.

In the dugout

Sam Cox will hope to end his short tenure in the Wealdstone hot seat on a high with National League safety in mind after he took on his first managerial role last week, replacing David Noble at St Georges.

He had been part of Noble’s staff as a first team coach, though since being asked to take on the reins on a temporary basis, Cox has settled well during a critical stage of the season.

This Wealdstone side were in desperate need of leadership before his arrival. The club had lost four consecutive league outings, whilst Cox has split his four games in charge (W2 L2), hoping to see off an impressive feat in his young career.
